Sailor Studio is a family-owned, enamel on copper company located in the Village of Stone Mountain, Georgia. The artists include Debbie Sailor Thigpen, her daughter Lily, and her daughter-n-law, Britni.
The artists of Sailor Studio are proud to offer distinctive, artistic jewelry at an affordable price. We continue to evolve and experiment with this limitless art form, using heavy gauge copper and vitreous enamels (ground glass washed and graded to 80 mesh). We order some of our copper shapes from a metal spinner, although many pieces are cut and shaped by hand in our workshop.
The enamel is applied to copper using many techniques such as free-hand, stencils, sifting, sgraffito, pinching, and painting. Then the piece is “flash-fired,” meaning it is placed into a kiln heated to 1500-1600 degrees for a few minutes so that the enamel melts quickly without damaging the metal. We develop our patterns with a series of 2-6 enamel applications and firings.
The finishing touches, finely ground liquid enamel or 14 karat gold, are then applied by pen or brush. After the final firing, the piece is polished using a grinder and any exposed copper is cleaned of fire-scale.
